A LITTLE PIECE OF ‘THYME OUT’ FOR YOU

Bi-Monthly Newsletter – July to August 2008

Welcome and congratulations for taking some well-deserved ‘ThymeOut’, great move! Now before you read this, make yourself a coffee/tea/milo, put your feet up, shut your eyes and take a couple of slow deep breaths and relax. Right, you’re ready to read…

Jobs to do in your garden during July include:

  • If you’re keen, you can still plant roses and deciduous trees. However, if you hear the pitter-patter of tiny raindrops (or not so tiny), you have two choices: think, “Yeah, I’ll do that next weekend”, or you can give me a call!

Get your gloves on and carry on the war against those terrorists that are slugs and snails! Yes, I take great delight in throwing them on the road, or a more polite treatment is slug and snail pellets. I know I mentioned this in my last newsletter, but you need to keep on top of them (preferably using your boot!).

  • In your vege garden sow broad beans (yum), onion, radish, spinach and turnip seed.

Spray winter veges (cabbage, cauli, broccoli and brussel sprouts) with Copper to prevent bacterial and fungal diseases. For organic gardening, no matter what soil type you have, you can improve it with the addition of lots of organic matter. It doesn’t matter what type of matter, as long as it’s weed-free and decomposed.

Time to prune your roses.

  • Give me a call.

Jobs to do in your garden during August include:

  • Apply mulch around berry canes like raspberries, boysenberries and loganberries. Then sit back and think – yum, yum, yum berries and ice cream!
  • Feed your citrus with a good all round fertiliser. I’m not partial to any particular one, but there is Yates Thrive ‘once a year feeder’. This is perfect for those who don’t have a lot of time to garden. In between long slow relaxing breaths, run outside, throw some around your trees, water in well (or do it when it’s raining!), come back inside, take more deep breaths and make another drink.
  • Copper is fantastic as it protects against lots of annoying little characters. Spray fruit trees, winter vege crops, roses and lots more.  Give me a call. Handy tips
  • To make pink hydrangeas ‘pinker’ sprinkle lime around the plant. To intensify blue, use aluminium sulphate.
  • To make a lovely hot chocolate, fill your cup with milk and microwave for one minute (watching for overflow!!). Take out and stir in your milo/chocolate and sugar. Put back in the microwave for 50 seconds, stir. Put your feet up with a good book. Upcoming events.
  • A couple of good websites with upcoming events are:

Composting

  • I promised in my last newsletter to fill you in a bit more about composting. I’ve attached a separate information sheet for your convenience.
  • What can I do for you? I will enable you to have more ‘you’ time; which is a precious commodity! Here is a before and after photo of my work, do you like the difference?

Parting Note

I hope you have enjoyed a little ‘Thyme Out’ and would like more. In my next newsletter find out why mulching is so important and what’s new in the garden. If you would like to receive further newsletters, please do nothing – yep, take it easy, relax back into that lazy-boy, sup on your hot chocolate and breathe easy. If you have ideas of what you would like to see in my newsletters, I’m welcome to suggestions.

If you wish to no longer receive newsletters, please let me know. Thank you and I hope you look forward to your next ‘Thyme Out’.

Take care,

Jo
