A LITTLE PIECE OF ‘THYME OUT’ FOR YOU
Bi-Monthly Newsletter – March to April 2009
Boy, who’s noticed the mornings getting cooler! Thyme to start looking after yourselves if you’re not already.
Jobs to do in your garden during March include:
- Treat your roses – feed, spray, deadhead.
- Get ready to order any new roses, they’ll be out soon!
- Yay, bulb planting time – daffodils, tulips, iris, freesias, hyacinths and spring flowering bulbs.
- Fert citrus and spray with Champion copper and Mavrik.
- Prepare your winter vege garden – add compost, general garden fert and lime (if needed) before planting.
- Plant beetroot, silverbeet (yum), broccoli, cauli, brussel sprouts and spinach.
- Continue to lift spuds, onions and kumaras. Store in a cool, dry place.
- Sow a manure crop in any vege garden that’s not being used eg blue lupins/mustard.
- Harvest basil and freeze.
- Divide and replant chives/ mint/thyme/rosemary/sage and majoram.
- Never forget to mulch, mulch, mulch.
- Finish preparing your lawn for re-sowing.
Jobs to do in your garden during April include:
- Time to bring in the last pumpkins, spuds and onions.
- Sow beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, onion, radish seeds.
- Have you done your manure crop?
- Raise your vege garden so it doesn’t get water logged.
- Winter clean up time, spray fruit trees with Copper before pruning.
- Yep clean up old summer flowers and plant with pretty pansies and violas.
- Keep planting spring bulbs.
- Prune shrubs that have finished flowering.
- Time to plant/transplant trees and shrubs.
- Don’t forget to MULCH!
- If you haven’t sown your lawn, this is the best month to do so!
Did you know:
- Tui has put out a new Eco range to deter pests, prevent plant diseases and make those beaut little plants grow. They are made from organic, non-toxic ingredients eg seaweed extracts. Range includes Eco-Pest, Eco-Fungicide and Eco-Fert – check it out!
Especially for you:
- Have you taken the time to smell the flowers? I did the other day and got a lovely surprise. I took in a whiff of a beautiful fragrant rose and the owner came out, congratulated me and offered a bloom – see they are supposed to be sniffed!
- With the cooler mornings starting to present themselves, prevention is better than cure. Get out the Vitamin C and odourless garlic (yes is it odourless!) and get on the ‘defensive’.
- Still do the slip, slop, slap routine – I do it all year round. The sun is so much harsher than when I was a child – all those years ago!
- A must to try is a hot stone massage with Wendy from The Gift of Touch. She is located at 185 Main St, Upper Hutt. Call her on 0800 186 824. Been there, done that, loved it! She also does relaxation and Indian Head massage (yet to try!).
